Shireen Pasha: making HIMA

part 2

In this second of the special two-part Tidings from Hazel Kahan program, Pakistani filmmaker Shireen Pasha talks about making making her film Hima Remembers, which explores the extraordinary time in the history of the Indian subcontinent after the decline of the Mughal Empire in the 18th century. With the history of the city of Lucknow and  the province of Awadh as background and the era of Partition providing context for the present, the documentary traces Hima’s life as she remembers the Awadh that was home.  Pasha illustrates Hima’s relationship through letters and the stories of her renowned talukdar writer father, a former nobleman who represents the best of Luckhnauvi civility and grace, a civilization now more memory than reality. The language of the film is Urdu, with English subtitles. (Broadcast on WPKN, October 30, 2019 and produced by Tony Ernst.)

About Leafages

"Credo" statement

Leafages by Hazel Kahan are made from real leaves, vines and tendrils interwoven with calligraphy, decorative pen and ink flourishes and imaginary Latin botanical names. Leafages contain a philosophical or inspirational thought, quotation or verse from sages, poets or religious texts. Some leafages are specially created for an individual, a couple or a family with words or leaves reflecting their personal narrative. They are available on the Leafages shop on Etsy although the supply is low right now, all my energies having been absorbed by the book I’ve been writing. Do come back soon when the shop will be full of new leafage abundance or contact me.
