Dave Berson’s life takes its meaning from Greenport. He wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, even though it’s often a tough life. In the summer, he operates Glory, a solar-powered boat which provides excursions around Peconic Bay for visitors and educational classes for local children. In the winter, he offers free classes for Greenport’s children.
To support his philanthropic activities Berson has just published, with Juliana Thomas, Workers on the Waterfront, a book of photographs that pays tribute to Greenport’s waterfront people who stubbornly continue their ancient trades, often against all odds.
The book is available for $20 from Dave himself (email him at dberson1@yahoo.com) or at Preston’s and Burton’s Bookstore in Greenport Village.
I interviewed Dave a few days ago for North Fork Works, my program on WPKN radio which will be broadcast on January 1 at 7:30 pm. Until then, you can hear Dave tell us why Greenport is the only place in the world he wants to live.
If you subscribe to the Soundings blog you’ll always catch what the tide’s just brought in.
