Dr. Yara Asi, author of How War Kills; The Overlooked Threats to our Health (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2024) and New York Times guest essay, is assistant professor at the University of Central Florida, where she studies physical and mental health in conflict-affected and fragile populations. A Palestinian born in the occupied West Bank town of Nablus, Dr. Asi describes the many challenges researchers face when trying to measure not only the extent of Gaza’s trauma but why healing its traumatized population will require medical and humanitarian solutions as well as the development of policy based on sensitivity to the uniqueness of its culture, political history and geography. (First heard on WPKN May 8, 2024.)
