Well-known botanist and conservationist Tom Rawinski talks about moving from his work in the field educating northeast region towns how to manage the connections between their forests, their deer and their hunters to becoming a Fellow in the coveted Harvard Forest Bullard Fellowship Program where he’ll be writing a book to explore the deer abundance issue around the United States. 1. Another terrific, clear and to the point interview by Hazel. Thanks for finding the best and brightest in our community and bringing us in depth conversations on issues that are so important to all of us.

    1. I do appreciate your words, Ellen. Although you and Tom have approached the deer overpopulation problem from different personal and geographical perches, I admire both of you for your unwavering commitment to redressing the assaults on our suffering ecosystem.

  2. Tom is exceedingly well-informed and passionate about the deer crisis but I fail to see how another book on the subject will produce broad public and political support for real solutions. Unless we can enlist a few charismatic Greta Thunbergs to the cause before the seed trees have died off, the values of the forest ecosystem will be lost to future generations.

  3. DEER ARE NATURAL BORN PREY.
    THEY DESERVE OUR PROTECTION.
TURTLE ISLAND IS THEIR NATURAL HABITAT.
IS IT YOURS? REMEMBER DEER ARE YOUR HOST.
BUILD WALLS THAT PROTECT THEM VS A BORDER WALL THAT KEEPS PEOPLE OUT.
    STEP UP OUTDOOR TICK CONTROL
MANDATE WIND/SOUND ALERTS ON ALL CARS
    STERILIZE BUCKS
    PLANT MORE TREES
    EAT LESS MEAT…
Most Americans don’t regularly eat venison.

CHOOSE A CRITICAL THREAT TO OUR COMMON HUMANITY TO DEFEND. AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

  4. I disagree with this guy completely. There were more deer here back in colonial days then now. The problem is not an over population of them it’s us that is the problem. I grew up in Pennsylvania and have lived here my whole life. I have seen more land being taken away over and over by mass development. Where exactly were deer going to go? We are killing the native plants, animals and birds. We are the ones that have caused such an imbalance that we use the deer as a scape goat to our major ecological screw ups!

About Leafages

"Credo" statement

Leafages by Hazel Kahan are made from real leaves, vines and tendrils interwoven with calligraphy, decorative pen and ink flourishes and imaginary Latin botanical names. Leafages contain a philosophical or inspirational thought, quotation or verse from sages, poets or religious texts. Some leafages are specially created for an individual, a couple or a family with words or leaves reflecting their personal narrative. They are available on the Leafages shop on Etsy although the supply is low right now, all my energies having been absorbed by the book I’ve been writing. Do come back soon when the shop will be full of new leafage abundance or contact me.
